A Brief History of The Encaustic Conference

Founded and Directed by Joanne Mattera in 2007, the Conference--now produced in conjunction with Cherie Mittenthal and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill--takes place in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the first weekend in June.

We wanted to give you a sense of the excitement that the Vendor Room holds, from the first thing on Friday morning when it opens to the last thing on Sunday afternoon when it closes, so we're doing it here with a Sidebar Scroll of images. We start with . . .

Hey, didn't we just see David A. Clark in the background of the previous picture?

Um, yes. So either our photographers shot at pretty much the same time, or David made repeat trips to the Paper Connection table. That's Lauren Pearlman Sugita, owner of the Paper Connection wrapping David's purchase

Kama Pigments

Our first stop: Kama Pigments, based in Montreal. This is the third year owner Vincent Deshais brought the shop to Provincetown

Evans Encaustics

Our next stop along the perimeter of the room: Evans Encaustics. Hylla Evans, owner of the Sonoma-based company, produces her paints in small batches by hand

Evans Encaustics has been with The Conference since the beginning but, oh, we get to see new colors each year

Enkaustikos

Continuing around the room, we come to the Enkaustikos display, with its variety of cakes and sticks. That's a busy Mike Lesczinski, owner of the Rochester-based Enkaustikos, behind the table. Enkaustikos has been with The Conference since the beginning, too

The room is so filled with light, even on an overcast day, that it's hard to photograph. But you can see the display clearly here

R&F Handmade Paints

Despite the crowd, you can get a sense of the R&F display, with its dramatic posters and stands of pigment sticks and blocks of paint. Paper Connection

Paper Connection, based in Providence, was new to the Conference this year. We loved the selection of papers--not only the patterned sheets shown here, but the plant-fiber papers that were such a hit with the monotype printers

Miles Conrad Encaustics

In addition to maintaining a studio practice and directing the Conrad Wilde Gallery in Tucson, Miles Conrad--shown here with Cari Hernandez--creates a full line of paints in a palette of the Sonoran Desert

Agave, Gecko, Lantana, Saquaro

A closeup of Miles's display, which includes his small-batch paints and a selection of waxes and tools. His Tucson shop , separate from the gallery, is set up for teaching
